Richardton Hospital and St. Joseph hospital are experiencing some financial problems. Due to this Richardton Memorial Hospital Administrator Jim Opdahl told area residents that they have to convert to nursing home for the hospital to continue in the community. The hospital will give up its critical access designation to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dickinson.
The Richardton Hospital was awarded a federal grant of $990,000 to pay for its conversion to a nursing home. However the problem is that they cannot use it for clearing their debt of about $750,000. Opdahl said that the hospital will change some services by ending its 24 hours emergency and acute care. St. Joseph Hospital has also agreed to forgive about $72,000 that Richardton owed them for many years.
