I'm sure you have heard that there is a nursing and that it has something to do with the baby boomers getting older and living longer. But there is more to it than just that. It would have been obvious to anyone who was involved in the government departments that look for such things, that there would be a nursing shortage in the future. Even now, we are quite sure that it will get worse, before it gets better. So, why aren't we solving it?
Some will argue, we are trying to solve it: look at all the money that is being thrown at the problem. Well, that may be, but the problem isn't that there aren't enough people who want to be nurses, every year colleges turn away many eligible nursing students. Why you ask? Because there aren't enough nursing instructors. To become a nursing instructor you have to obtain an advanced degree, but after this degree you get paid less than you would if you just practiced as a nurse. Due to this nursing instructors are getting older and are not being replaced. This is the problem we need to fix...
